Hi Jobbo,
Have heard the same but you must fish the beach at night to have any chance of catching codling.

I did the golf course Monday night - absolute crap - just one schoolie in 4 hours. I had a nice size codling a couple of weeks ago on the rising tide but that was near the Coastguard station, also had a couple of dabs in the same area last week.
Guess where I am going to fish the spring tides which are coming up? |

I fished last night for 6 hours and it was useless, a few small bites, the bloke a couple of groynnes down had 1 small bream, I had every bait under the sun, peeler, squid, lug, mack, sand eel, rag.... but still nothing!
Also tried the same place on friday morings tide, 2 massive bites on mack close in so bass I'm assuming, after that nothing until about 10 am (after getting there at 2am) when a 4inch gurnard stopped me from blanking!
Eccles, just wondering as you're the local pro where can I catch a few fresh mack as I had to buy some yesterday and it was rubbish, didnt even stay on the hook. Problem is if I get out during the day it's for an hour tops, the rest of the time it's night tides & not many people are up for giving up spots. Cheers |

Mackeral has been very poor this year at Hayling, have not had many myself. Best to try in the Harbour entrances around an hour or so after low water. |

I think I might have to try an early moring at south parade, as I've tried twice in the past month down at sandy point over low and once down ferry drive (...or road ....west end of hayling anyways) and came back with absolutely nothing!
Terrible thats it's been such a bad year for them though, but I hate buying them as they look about a month old.
Cheers anyways! |

Next tides for a chance of Hayling cod ... 14th - 18th Oct.
Now we've had a 'blow', you might be lucky.
Go groynes 20 - 30 at Eastoke Corner.
On those Springs, fish 2 hrs up and down.
You might be lucky like this bloke at Groyne 23 -
