I wrote this some while ago for a mag .... might be useful:

MAJOR MARKS - PAGHAM, W. SUSSEX

Is a small and friendly Sussex town situated to the east of Selsey Bill. As far as recreational anglers are concerned, this venue is an unspoiled ‘mecca’ of English Channel shore fishing. It’s too difficult to navigate and ‘plough’ by the larger commercial boats. It epitomises the small coastal village, which can sustainably support static nets and pots from surrounding Bognor and Selsey. English Nature and areas of Special Scientific Interest ensure it stays that way. As a result you will find localised undisturbed kelp and shingly grounds which support the benthic organisms which our fish feed on. Don’t be afraid to experiment with hardback crabs (as well as ‘peelers’), prawns, butterfish and larger baits like mackerel and whole squid. The venue has limited space and can be congested as far as parking is concerned. The main Pagham Harbour car park is locked at 8pm, so be careful. Find a spot just past the King’s Head pub alongside the amusements for night sessions.

SPECIES – no shortage here; bass, mackerel, dogfish, bream, gurnards and in season, codling and whiting; but it is the quality smoothhounds from May to the end of July which attract most attention.

BAIT and TACKLE – you will always meet weedy conditions here where two tides meet and deposit endless clumps all summer. After a southerly blow can leave the shore marks unfishable for a few days. At other times, ‘grin and bare it’, as you will usually get a one or two hour break after high water. A good beachcaster and 20 lbs line plus leader is needed. Make your leaders a bit longer for long-hauling clumps of weed up the beach. A pulley or single paternoster ending in a 3/0 for smoothies and codling will work; as will two or three hook flappers for the bream which can reach three pounds during calm conditions in April/May. Lugworm is the staple here and will usually out-fish ragworm. Rough weather, even in winter, will bring bass close to shore when slipper limpet is the best bait to use.

GETTING THERE – take the minor road to Pagham from the A27 Chichester By-pass/A 259 (Bognor) roundabout. Keep on the Pagham Road past the nurseries. Go through Nyetimber and past The Bear and The Lamb public houses. Turn left just before Church Farm Club into Sea Lane. There is parking at the junction of the Kings Head pub. It’s a short walk past the Yacht Club to the beach.

TACKLE SHOPS – there are none at Pagham and it’s best to get your bait on the way or nearest at:
