alreet mate, basically a shockleader takes the impact during a cast, a shockleader should be 10x the weight of the sinker you are using,i.e if using a 5oz sinker use 50lb shockleader.Any type of power casting requires a shockleader even if using 30lb line straight through, the only downside to using a shockleader is when fishing rough ground, or there is plenty kelp about, is that the knot can catch on the kelp thereby resulting in you being snagged. When attaching my shockleader i use the bimini twist with a blob knot then superglued to get rid of any tag ends, helping eliminate kelp gathering around the knot |

Hi floundering,
I was the same as you about 2 weeks ago, i thought it was just something that a pro would use and that it was not realy required until i noticed my line was braking alot when i did a realy big power cast. So i decided it was time to purchase some Shockleader from a shop in Whitby. The chap sold me some 'Shakespear Omni X' in red and told me it was one of the best makes and so far he has been spot on, hasnt troubled me yet and has put alot more confidence into my casting.

Hi floundering
with the shockleader you should use a length of twice your rod length plus 6 turns around your reel.
As to the weight of the shockleader i use 10 times the sinker weight plus another 10 lb
hope this helps

the length of shockleader is, 6 turns on your reel, length of the rod Plus the drop you normally have when casting. there are too many brands of shockleader to name, but suffix do a good one as do greys, berkely etc, tapered leaders are a bit better as they give smaller knots |

What a lot of folk tend to forget is that when they make up their own traces the trace must be equal to the strength of the shockleader other wise it becomes the weakest link. (fogive the pun)

I just use a heavier mono of what ever I have on hand. I don't think buying a particular brand just for shock leader makes a big difference.
10 lbs of test for every one oz of weight
length of shocker = 2x reel to tip top + 6 turns on the spool |

the way i prepair my mussles is to get a bucket full then pour boiling water on them it doesnt cook them as such but i does open them slightly and firms them up |

My setup from reel to trace is as follows:-
15lb Daiwa Tournament Main Line (Yellow)
60lb Greased Weasel Leader (Orange) - the best leader in my opinion.
40lb Amnesia Main Rig Body (Black/Clear)
25lb Amnesia Hook Snoods (Clear)
I use this for all locations around the East Coast and it is fine, never had the need to match Main Rig Body to Leader in over 20 years, saying that never used a Shock Leader till this year when learnt to OTG cast as always fished straight through with 20-30lb Main Line.
Tapered leaders are good, bit pricey as you only get normally five on a spool but are ideal for F/S and L/W reels. |
