Hi, welcome to the site. your questions invite a multitude of answers, but without making it complicated heres a few. Bait elastic is exactly that, its elastic used to tie the bait onto the hook if needed, this stops it coming off when casting. (its quite cheap and lasts ages) for the catching part, use small hooks, The smallest i use is a 1/0 simply because i try not to catch anything too small. As for bait, i often use Macky and squid together, in fact its my bait for tomorrow down near spurn point. You dont say where you fish from, ie which pier. Its easier to give advice on bait etc, if people know where you intend to fish. cheers...Mick |

Hi, yes i know saltburn pier, the only problem with it is the tide, you cant follow it. I also know staithes, to visit. You could also try Runswick, you can backtrack as the tide comes in, then fish from the slipway. I would suggest you bottom fish, you can use a 5oz gripper, or a bullet lead which will move around with the tide. try it with a 2 or 3 hook flapper. Its a case of try it and see if theres no one local to help. I havnt fished that area for over 2 years now. hopefully, someone will come online with up to date knowledge. Cheers....Mick |

Loads of blokes sell stuff on ebay but stick to the ones who have been at it for a while and have a high reputation (over 98%) to start with. Also this firm has some good stuff sometimes: http://www.tacklebargains.co.uk/acatalog/index.html
One of the open secrets of sea angling is knowing where the fish will be and at what state of the tide. Until you get to know some of this stuff for your area, I'm afraid you will get a few blanks. You just have to stick at it and try different venues and don't assume piers are good places to fish. I hardly ever fish piers but tend to fish what I call fish runs. These are often the edges of channels and deeper spots where fish will often congregate at certain states of the tide. For instance there are a couple of deep channels near me where I nearly always get a fish or two just as the tide starts to come in. |

I'm 65 and go fishing every week right through the year (except February). In winter I wear thermal longjohns and thermal ski trousers from Lidl (they are the dogs and only £12 LOL). Lidl's ski jackets are good for Autumn/Winter night fishing too. I'm very sorry for you young'uns cos you have such carp music these days compared with the really cool stuff we had back in the '60's. |
