Hi All,

Not sure if many of you are aware, but there are a number of changes being proposed in the Marine and Coastal Access Bill that may affect sea anglers as and when it comes in. Many of the measures being proposed will be aimed at protecting fish stocks from commercial fishing pressure, however this will undoubtedly filter through to recreational sea anglers in some form or another. Other measures being taken will be setting up of marine reserves to protect breeding grounds and breeding populations of fish to help maintain fish stocks.

The above is for the benefit of all of us as marine users, however they will probably affect us to some degree (restricted access to certain areas at certain times, and possible restrictions on catches).

I understand DEFRA are still open to dialogue with interested users (and in fact may actively encourage information from sea anglers as to productive fishing areas, the change in catch sizes / species over time, etc.), so if people had concerns or questions, then it should still be possible to voice them.

A link to the DEFRA website and outline of the proposed Bill is as follows: http://www.defra.gov.uk/marine/legislation/sectors/industry.htm

Hope this is of interest to people and would love to find out peoples initial thoughts on this (as a fish biologist and sea angler myself). Also is anyone a member of this forum who also works for DEFRA and might be able to explain the proposed Bill to us in more detail and how this will affect us?

Best Regards - Dan
