Hi all. Ofcom issue ship radio licences. Yes, it's called a ship radio licence.
Believe it or not, it's free.
Information required is , the ships name, the type of vessel, it's length.
They will issue a call sign. And yes it is an offence to use one from the land. Fines for offences are around the £5000 mark.
The radio regulatory department can pin point you to 10 feet.
If you see someone in trouble 'phone 999 and ask the coast guard. That is all you can do. If you are concerned about falling in from a fishing mark on some dodgy cliffs, wear a lifejacket whilst fishing.

hi roy, in the 20+ years i have had my licence i have only been asked to produce it once that was to the coastguard when my boat broke down and the rnli had to come to my assistance, as i was told by them it is law that if you want to opperate a vhf set you have to be licenced

thanks for the information i will get one now i know i have been a deep sea fisherman all my life and did not know but you learn some thing every day once again thanks |
