set up with jackspratt and in the water before 7.......... very light breeze almost still. when we got there the water was a lovely dirty brown at the shore. put first rod out with big hook and whole squid. put the second rod out with a three hook flapper on, size 1 hooks and whole worm but smallish baits, some small squid tips now and then. used lug and rag but in no order just what came to hand lol.
put both rods at about 80ish yards and waited........about half hour in the three hook took a very hard hit.........which is unusual!!! set the hook and had the first fish on, could feel it banging and knodding. its started kite'ing and i thought i was in for sure!!!! NOT!!! lost it somewhere on the way in but it felt really like a good fish....doh. first thoughts were good dogfish as it felt heavy and they displace the water (like the little crabs do that feel like a two pounder lol)
took a couple of little pout around dusk on the three hook flapper and though my chance had gone for a "proper" fish. about high water the three hook chroned over furiously again and yet again i set the hook. it felt real good with the fish on, drifting left and right!!! genuinly thought i had my first good bass............up she came on the beach a sleek codling around 3lb. it was more like a whiting, not girthy like most codling. very interested to find a whole 4"dover sole inside its gullet, as well as a couple of softie crabs! all in all about 7 or 8 bites all night. jackiesprattie had just the one bite as he was packing up......a good strong bite too. patience is a virtue they say........but patience went east out the thames with his bait lol!!!
all bites fell to the three hook .....nothing to the big bait even when i changed to mostly worm on it. all the bites came to newly dropped baits as well which was odd.
nice night with good company |

Well done Col, bit less of a walk than your usual OJ jaunts.
Do you think that'll be the last cod of the season you pulled out there?
Surprised no bass for you tho, always at least a few schoolies showing
Were you up at the snaggy end or nearer to behind the caravan park |

i have shyed away from the oj with the codling moving out.......didnt expect to get the codling dobber, it was a welcome retrieve. as you also said i thought i would get at least one schoolie...maybe it was a billy bass on the lost bite? i go by the steps and groin (in venue pics) as i dont like the heavy tackle loses that the west end of the camp offers lol. most of the bites were about fourty yards out from the groin tip. lastly it has given me renewed hope using a three hook flapper. normally produces lots of fish but small ones.......lovely to get a keeper codling on one!!! |

Well done on the codling col, starting to miss the old Thames estury marks after reading that.. Tides round here very strange and no deep cod waters like the Oj... |

Good read col, sounded good! Must give that spot a try. Been on the oj a couple of times over the last 2 weeks and been very quiet. Still, makes a more than pleasant change from the tv!
Was wondering, keep hearing off the older boys that you should not fish the estuary when an easterly is blowing, not supposed to be good, well beggining to see sometrhing in that!!! Is there something in this??? And why??
Cheers, Mark................ |

old wives tale reads fish bite least when the wind blows east..........however this could only be true on certain tides or areas maybe........ie switch to west coast and it turns on its head surely? i have given up with the science of tides, wind and storm.........the only one i can put my heart and soul behind is the night v day. Night wins hands down. this was evident when bites came fivefold over pre dusk!! grieg....look forward to sunday out with ya fella. |
