Purchased two Sonik SK3 13ft 5-7oz rods about a month ago to be used with my Abu Multipliers and Penn F/S reels and always been a overhead thumper till recentley when i started to learn "off ground casting" so thought would do some casting practice on the beach yesterday and after 6 chucks, SNAP!
Called Tim @ Sonik from the beach and they sent out a replacement straight away with no quibbles, guess they are getting used to this by now?
I am now wondering if my other rod seeing as it was bought at the same time is of the same batch and has this weak point too.
My understanding is that the rods are manufactured at the same place as the Greys rod seeing as the directors of Sonik are ex Greys i guess that is not a coincedence, so are these rods just re-branded Greys?

Hello Sniper, the blanks aren't rebranded Greys but the new Greys do have the same problem, and as you say it's the same manufacturer.
Both companies do offer life time guarantees, but its not much consolation whenyour standing on the beach with a broken rod and cant fish.
Personally I wouldnt use a sonik or a new greys rod because of this issue, its a shame that they haven't bothered to address it yet, but if they dont then they wont continue to sell rods for much longer. Good luck with the new one, I think you'll need it I'm sorry to say. |

Touch wood
I've got one of these soniks as well and never had a prob. Been OTG casting it since I had it. But when I hear reports like this, it makes me more nervous every time I use it.
Found the action of the rod suits my casting just right compared to my other rods. One too stiff, the other too soft.
How did it feel casting before the 2 snap ups? |

Thats 7 of these super dooper rods i know of that have broken now.
So much for the design and build, people should buy from tried and tested companys, not because theve been plastered over sea-dangler for the past 6 months.
I would ask for my money back not for a replacement.
Good luck mate

The feel of the rod is great when casting and bite detection is really good, the reel seats are poo though as they tend to move around too much even though done up really tight. |

i'm all for trying new products but these issues should have been sorted by now and certainly before their launch into the market - thank god for a lifetime guarantee! |

Why not try Firefly Snipes? I always do OTG casting with mine (the airialised version taught by John Holden). Had my Firefly 390 beachcaster for over a year now no probs. I also think that the Shakespeare Salts are good rods too. |

Never a truer word spoken. For the money sniper the shakespeare salt range are very good value. The only problem I have with my 13 footers is they are hard to transport as they are 2 piece. The 14ft has 3 sections and still performs well, which if I had thought about it more would have been the one to buy.
Best of luck with whichever rod you choose. |
