Recently my son keeps asking me to buy him one of the crapy fishing kits for £5 in the toy shops, but I was thinking i could get something better that will last him a long time, I thought it might be good to start him of with a bit of float fishing of a pier or feathering. Any ideas on what to buy appreciated, |

Difficult call.
Five year olds tend to out grow stuff in measures of weeks rather than months, but then they view it from a different perspective.
If the crappy £5 kit works for a few weeks and keeps them keen - Job done.
Then there's crab lines lol |

This is my forte as I have taught many a young un how to fish.
Short lightweight spinning rod
A very small spinning reel
Siingle hook trace with beads 2in away from the hook and a 2oz weight,
Watch their faces when they catch their first flattie.
Whole outfit about £20 or less.
Cheers keith |

i bought my nephew adam a 6ft spinning rod and reel a couple of hokai rigs and some pre made 2 and 3 hook flapper rigs and some "watch" style weights and then he out fished me on the local pier ,but he was hooked [excuse the pun] and now he has his own tackle box and gear, keep it simple and make it fun ,and teach him catch and release is a good thing ,tight lines and keep us posted on how he does |

I have bought my four year old a fladen 7ft rod and reel set up, this cost me about £20 and came with a float setup and line on the reel. As for tackle he uses daddy's for the minute but if not careful he empties his thomas painting box (which looks like a tackle box) and pinches it from mine to put in there. He is yet to catch anything but hoping to get him out a bit more this year. He loves his rod though as it is flourescent orange. Just got to teach him to be patient and wait for the fish to bite before he starts to reel in lol

Once we get past the casting stage or if we do, I think my son will probably want to reel in every 2 minutes. I think teaching patience to a youngster will probably be the hardest part.

I have found that if you take a small drop net that they can pull in themselves it gives the rod a chance to fish properly .
A few crabs or small fish in a bucket caught in the drop net can keep kids occupied till a proper fish turns up. |
