Hi all,

As you all know my first ever boat trip didn't go to plan.(As in I blanked).

I started with 2 hook flapper with lug and squid tips.

tried whole squid filled with "Rubby dubby" on the flapper.
then switched to pennel rigs on flapper with larger baits and filled squid Worm and squid tips.

took one of the hooks off lengthened the snood tried all the above baits!!!

Last but not least had ledger with 5/0 pennels large and smaller baits using anything and everything available,

Where did I go wrong ????

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Cabrat "Dave"

Dave,
My advice is keep it simple. Running ledger or pulley rig (to make sure the bait is on the bottom not suspended away from Mr Cod off the bottom) with a hook snood of some 2-3 ft and a 3/0 or 2/0 pennel rig trace with lug and squid tip.
But the most important thing (above all of that) is to make sure if you are fishing off the back of the boat (not uptiding) is to have loads of lead on and make sue you are on the bottom when that tide is running hard. This is of course when fish feed most but a lot of people cant hold bottom and so the fish don't get near the bait. Let loads of line out till you feel the lead hit bottom. Then let a little more out.
Or better still try uptiding as it is far more productive than dangling off the back.
We will sort it out on the 29th mate. No worries.
Dave

try this. get up at 3:30 in the morning travel down to brighton, have a fry up. get aboard boat and travel for a further 2 and 1/2 hours going 24 miles out. Start fishing for pollock, fished 3 wrecks for three hours (in which time i had a couple one of 10lb). then realise the guy on the back of the boat who we think is sea sick is actually really ill. so we order a helicopter to come and pick him up. We then thought we were going to carry on fishing as there was no more we could do for the poor chap, only to be told we have to come in because they want to question the skipper. What a load of bol£%*s. after traveling back for another 2 and 1/2 hours. The skipper was asked a few questions, which could have been done over the radio. instead we lost all our fishing time. not the skippers fault. The poorly guy is fine now, it was a case of sea sickness combined with gastro blah blah. £50 for three hours fishing hurt. Still there is always next time.
(oh and 10lb was the biggest and i was the only one to catch 2. only problem was there was no sweep crying crying ).

Mark, I felt sick just reading that (hold the helicopter mate).
That is terrible luck.
I would be very tempted to ask the skipper for a free trip as although it wasn't his fault the guy chundering his liver out it wasn't yours either.
I always found in the past that the best wreck fishing happens in summer when the sea is kinder and you can always top up your tan.

Shame on your fishing trip Twinkle S*** happens keep smiling big grin

Hi redleg,

The guys on the boat know I have only been fishing since late last year and am very green behind the ears where knowledge is concerned. confused

I know I put myself forward for a fall but it is all done in the best of humours and the lads on the boat Sunday all had such a laugh with me as opposed to at me !!!!!

I learn't a lot have read even more off this forum but practice makes perfect.

I made mistakes Sunday and won't be making them on again on the 29th.

I doubt I'll change I'm a Northern lad more front than Southend LOL devil devil

I'll keep trying to catch the little gits one of these years i might become competent lol... devil devil

Best advice is keep it simple and just keep swaping hookbaits (not rigs) until you catch.Leave the rubby dubby at home cabrat devil
