Do you have the handbooks for the two units?
You need to identify the NMEA in and out wires on each unit.
Connect NMEA out on the GPS to the in wire on the VHF.
Connect the VHF out to the in wire on the GPS.
If you have no handbook search the manufacturers website for wiring colour coding.
You then need to go into the menu on the GPS to ensure the NMEA out is set to the same format required by the radio.
Sounds a bit longwinded but its easy once the coloured wires are identified. |

Thanks for the replies. Yes Crossy it is for the DSC to work. I want the GPS position to be displayed on the radio and the coordinates sent in any distress message that I might have to (hopefully not) send.
Thanks Tomcat, I have both handbooks but am struggling (slightly thick with electronics) to understand the blurb. I will reread the instructions bearing your reply in mind. Thanks again.

I got the lead from a company on ebay called prscomms for about £15.00
its has a connector for your radio and a bunch of wires to connect into the wiring on your Garmin , best thing was that it came with a diagram.
basically the black wire from your Garmin is the neutral wire and this carries the NMEA signal , you just splice into it and then I think it was the yellow wire spliced to the white wire.
It took about 20 mins to do and I am no electronics wizard , half exoected the flippin thing to blow up , but no hey presto the info is relayed to your VHF. Hope I never have to use it also but its comforting to know its there, I have taught my nine year old lad which button to press to get help if anything untoward happens to me
good luck
Tom |

Thanks for that Tom. I contacted Garmin by email through their website. They were very helpful sending a detailed wiring diagram with easily understood instructions.
I hope to do the job this coming weekend.

Paul, double check before following the instruction from Tom. I fitted the Garmin 215 to a friends dsc radio some years ago and recall the Garmin nmea out wire being coloured BLUE. I have checked on the Garmin 152 downloadable handbook and it is shown as BLUE there as well. You still need the black wire to run to a common earth for the two units to communicate. if you need any help I pm'd you my telephone details. George. |

Thanks again George and you are right it is the blue wire according to Garmin.
I've saved your phone number from your pm and if I need any further help I'll call you.
Best regards Paul |

You are very welcome. I wasn't trying to demean Toms advice. I was just concerned that if you used the black wire as nmea out it may have caused damage to one or both of your units. Happy boating. George. |
