|
|
HI
I was wondering if anyone could help me please. I am looking to buy my boyfriend a new fishing rod for xmas and i have no idea which one to get. He goes fishing from the pier and some times the beach (I think, no offence to you fishermen out there but I can't stand fishing!!!) He will spend hours, I also think he sometimes goes on boats to fish!!
I have been looking at the Anyfish Anywhere rods but I just don't have a clue about anythiny.
Are these any good or shall i get something else, also do they come with reels and wire or do I get them separatly????
Any help would be great.
Many Thanks
Angela |

Take a peek at his rods and see if you can see what make he already has and what sort of length they are, it could give us a clue.
Some rods are very cheap, others go into the hundreds, it does depend on the person.
From that we may be able to advise you on a suitable rod etc

| "Anyfish Anywhere" stuff is overpriced in my opinion. Many of us would like an all carbon fibre rod somewhere between 12 and 15 feet long, preferably which can be "collapsed" down to a size which is easy to get in the car. For me this currently means a 13 ft long rod which comes in three pieces and has SIC or Fuji guides (these are the rings which are fixed to the rod with thread whipping). Also we need to know what kind of reels he likes to use - "multipliers" or "fixed spools" becuase the rod fittings are different. If right now someone offered me a good new rod at a reasonable price, I would choose the latest "Shakespeare Salt Beach long" 13ft:- Made of all the right stuff, comes in three pieces and can be got for £60 - £70. |

Ain't you guys great!!
I will take a peek at his rods tonight and see what size they are... they look very long to me.
I was thinking that those anywhere fishe ones were expensive.
Do the rods come with anything or do you have to buy it all from different places?

I've been thinking about this carefully and to be honest I'm bored to tears of the expensive rod vs cheap rod debate which rears its head every time someone asks for advice about which rod to buy.
You've mentioned the Anyfish Anywhere rod so I assume you're prepared to pay a fair whack for the rod. Buying fishing rods is a very personal thing-I know it's not in the spirit of Christmas and having a surprise prezzy but if I were you I'd ask your boyfriend what rod he would buy if he had some spare money up to the amount you want to spend- at least that'll give you a better idea. You never know if he's as dense as me he might not cotton on.
At least this way he wont be disappointed with a rod he might not be able to use or have any use for. |
Excellent advise - use covert tactics, that is what I do for SWMBO every year - pick up a magazine and say "oh look at these hair straightners" for example, to which she would reply either "They are are good" or "Crap" , that sparks off the conversation and gives me a clue on what to start looking at.
It has worked this year, 12 year in a row |

Thanks for all the tips but I think I might get him a voucher because it all seems too hard for me and your right it is a personal thing and i want to get him something that he will use for hours on end (well, it gets him out of my nicely straightened hair, doesn't it!!!)
I still think your all mad for wanting to fish in this weather!
PS: If i get him a nice expensive gift, then he might get me one x |

| We probably are mad Angela but you need to understand the hunter/competitor instinct in men. In prehistoric times the best hunters always put food on the family table and we can't get out of the habit. |

yes but the female species in those days also were quiet, did as they were told and took orders - they got out of those habits did'nt they ? |

| And now, Angela, that you have decided what you want to get him, dont be a stranger to this forum. It is not often that someone sane and sensible posts anything on these boards!!!!!!!! |

Angela
You can get a Ron Thompson Accelerator for about £100 and if he fishes both beaches and piers this is a perfectly good cheapish rod where I hear nothing but good things about. As for a reel - a penn supermag is the bee knees when it comes to beach/pier reels but at just over £100. You can get an excellent alternative of a Slosh 20 (not sure how much they are but under £100. I guarantee that he will be more than happy with this selection as this setup will also cope if he goes off the rocks. This stuff very rarely comes with line but you could get him a spool of 20lb line and a 60lb shockleader spool for under a tenner. This will cope with both beach and pier again. It seems you're looking for a definite answer and in my opinion for under £200 you can't really get better than these unless you buy second hand which can be dodgy if you don't know what you're looking for. As for the boat, this is totally different. He will need a boat rod and reel but a lot of charter boats hire out the stuff when you go out with them for coppers otherwise you'll be able to pick up a cheapish combination from most tackle shops. It's hard to go wrong with a boat kit and I'm sure most tackle shops will help you out but be careful if they try and sell you a beach/pier combination rod and reel as the reels are usually crap. Hope this helps a bit more. |

| According to their website etc Richard Holgate of Metcalfes will let you take their rods down to the beach at Walton to try before you buy- I've not put that theory to the test but you could do worse to see if you can try the new meta-lite flick tip- depends on how much you want to spend though |
thank you stuartdy,,,,,,,but is going to be my firts time using a multiplier,,,,,,, |
