Well it would have been a very good day, good company, good weather, good boat, but I was the only one to blank and it hurts.
On the long drive back from north of the Thames (the natives were really friendly) I reflected on what went wrong, was it god paying me back for posting the other week that "I had never blanked on a boat" or was it the bait, every one had bigger fatter lug than I had, essexdave had tiny squid that made your mouth water, griggwwr had a secret weapon in the shape of a Christmas tree without the lights, those coming on the 29th will see this marvelous rig and if I can remember to make it properly you may see 2 (going to have lights on mine), southendfisherman had all the local knowledge in fact macer and/or conehead (jasons 1 and 2 don't know which one is which) could have hit the boat casting off end of southend pier, jason 1 or 2 used a spectacularly large squid lug cocktail on penel rig (size 8/0 bottom 4/0 top) the hooks were to hold the bait on, the secret of this rig I think is the cod get so excited they get tangled up in foot long lug and squid tentacles that they strangle themselves.
That left the other jason 1 or 2 and me with 1 hour to go and the only blanks, jason had been given some foot long lug by essexdave and this did the trick and after a long fight we all saw the cod mouth wide open being hauled by a tiring jason to the boat and then it was gone taking rig and weight with it not sure why could have been the Christmas tree or fighting through the other jasons massive bait we were all gutted . jason fits new rig recasts and another fish but no its not another fish its the same one along with a tangle of line and the lost rig
It was at this stage I began to think that it was not my day and everything was against me but especially god, bob (the skipper) gave me words of comfort saying "if he had not got 1 today it would have been his 3rd blank on the trot", he meant well but it does not help being told everybody has blanks when its you blanking, 15 minute call goes out and quickly rebait am the last rod in the water and have to admit defeat.
After long contemplation I know why I blanked it was not the bait, technique, skipper or even god, it was no ground bait!!!! no one was sick.
So that really does put the pressure on cadrat for the 29th, captain has got puke his heart up for the sake of the rest of us?
Was given the little succulent squid and foot long lug as consolation prize by essexdave so just off to Crete hall road Northfleet as recommended by theshadow got to get at least 1 fish |

ReallyTangled,
I would forget the baby squid or the foot long lug.
I would recomend a visit to church mate , cause when your luck is not in there isn't much more you can do. I am sure next time you will be pulling them up and I will be the one blanking.
Chin up my man.
Think of that lovely Christmas tree rig you are going to attempt to build.
I would ask Greg for a technical drawing though as I am an engineer and I wouldn't attempt it from memory.lol.
No offence Greg.
