Fished Dengemarsh again, couldnt get there quick enough after the F8/F9 storm on Sat. Scooped out 50 fresh yellowtails, and fished from 10.30pm to 01.15am.
Amazing session, had a 7lb 2oz cod first cast, with 13 others, inc 9 betwen 2lb and 2lb12oz. No whiting at all (shame), except the one the 7lb-er had chewed on! Even had two doubles, using single trace pennell rig!! Only had 2 casts all session where i didnt pull in a codling.
Sea state was like a millpond, with a slight wash, fairly strong tide, but with very little weed, and what seemed like a F5-6 NNE wind (right behind me). Have some pics, will try and upload somewhere (still trying to get round to posting my last sesion pics!!). Probably my last session ths year, but cant wait until winter 2009......
Good luck to anyone going tonight, you may just catch the last of the food washed up in the storm, the codling were stuffed full of crab and fish. |

Yes, these had a sprat or two as well I think, all a bit mushy really, I think they'd been competing on im a celebrity, and tried everything on the table!
Well Done, Looks like you also had a really good session at Deal, lets hope we have a few more years of these cod gluts! - best years i can remember were '97-'98, but this has proved even better. (and ive finally sussed how to link to the images, thanks flattiefanatic!)

Hmmm, I did wonder if I might get a comment relating to keeping all the fish.
Its a fair point, but, i'm entitled to keep them as much as any trawler, and at least they all went to good homes and freezers, and didnt get lobbed back dead because a quota had been reached........if there are no cod around next year, I doubt it will be the beach anglers to blame.
Im sure others will beg to differ, but personally, I never feel cod, whiting or pout have much chance of surviving after being dragged up the beach, unhooked and being thrown back, especially when theres a big surf and backwash - Its always sad when you have to put back an undersized fish, knowing full well it will be washed up again 30 minutes. (One did actually go back as it was lightly hooked, and I was able to get close enough to the sea to put it back gently).
If you can genuinely eat and give away all you catch, and are strong enough to carry it on a 15 minute walk back to the car, then good luck to you. |

Yours is a voice of reason.
Enjoy your catch, I know I would in your position.
Sometimes we boil them in very salty water and they taste good. Other times we had to freeze or salt them first ,taste okay, but we didn''t go hungry. |

yo mart.....I agree, they're very fragile, as are the entire cod familly, but you look like a competant fisherman (unlike my spelling) and musta lip hooked some of them.
I always try and release any that look like they'll stand a chance, and if they wash up on the beach 2 mins later I'll take em home. I hate preaching (believe it or not) just think that as shore anglers, doing this great sport as a hobby, we should be showing the commercials, that things CAN be done sustainably, and not using it as an excuse for mass slaughter.
having said that all your fish are a good size, and if they all get eaten, or given to friends, then fair play mate...and tight lines!
my real beef is with keeping the very small, only just legal fish. |
