I have been fishing for over 50 years and sea fishing for 40 + and I regard myself as an average caster 80 to 100 yards but I would not consider doing this without a shock leader or a decent rod, regarding the size of weights Eccles, around this part of the coast on 6 metre + tides you do have use 8 oz leads on parts of the tide unless you want to become a pain in the ass to the next guy I sometimes have to use 8 oz with fixed wire geminis at Dover & Sandwich. Sniggle I have yet to see the river that rip through with the same force as spring tide off the Addy or the Breakwater, maybe the Severn in on full bore.
In short if anybody turned up on the beaches around this area and tried hurling a lead out on a carp rod I am sure it would be mentioned to him that it wasnt a good idea, and he would probably be put straight.

Carp rods can be used to great effect if used in the right way. I sometimes use my Shakespeare ugly stick 3.25lb test alongside my beach rods like the century c3 or K2 team extreme. Carp rods can be used boat or beach and a friend of mine regularly uses the same rod as me on the boat off Alderney to fish for cod, bass, mullet and even sharks. They will take the pressure. On the beach 3 or 4oz max plus bait for a carp style overhead thump into the breakers will see many fish being landed and giving a lot more sport than the big powerfull seafishing rods. Ive landed bass, whiting and pollack off the coast of Brighton using these tactics on Carp rods and a large fixed spool reel like the penn 850 or a k2 powerplay. So yes you can use your carp rods but be sensible think about the test curve of the rod youre using and and make sure you clean them so the rings dont rust up. A bit of vaseline around the rings where they join the blank helps keep water out too!
