Cheers mate, I'll get the serial number tomorrow. Funnily enough I bought the engine from a Scottish guy called Brian Yates from Burnley last year. The engine started ok but did not pump water. Saying that I only ran it for about 30 seconds in case I damaged it. Paid £800 and so far has been a complete waste of money. I paid the guy £120 to deliver the engine and he turned up 10 o'clock at night to late to get it going. I have a sneaking suspicion that Mr Yates seen me coming. |

Just seen the engine looks in good condition on the outside - My mind is doing over time Chris chance to get my £1,000 back here if I play my cards right. What a fluke did not expect to ever hear his name again let alone possibly getting his address and money back. Nice one Chris. |

Chris I would be grateful if you would sell me the manual. Let us know how much and i'll cover the post and packing no problem. I reckon Mr Yates is buying knackered or knock off engines repainting/touching-up and flogging on at big profit. I explained to Mr Yates when buying the engines that I fish dangerous tide races and he would be putting my life on the line if the engine is not what he said it is basically £800 worth of engine. I've caught him out lying already with the power trim which said worked but had barnacles on places which could only mean that part of the engine had been submerged probably on a mooring. It my own fault for being so trusting and his fault for getting caught out. I'm not too sure yet how to tackle this one, but I do have options. Thanks again mate |

Is the engine different in construction to other outboards? All that I've had follow a very simple system. Unbolt the bolts that hold the lower gearbox unit to the leg of the motor after first disconnecting the linkage from the gear selector rod that runs down the leading edge of the leg. Lower the gearbox from the leg, it usually brings either the drive shaft or water lift tube or both with it. looking down to the top of the exposed top of the gearbox you will see the top of the impeller housing, generally held in place by 3 or 4 bolts. Remove these to expose the impeller. Make a note of the direction in which the blades of the existing impeller are bent. The new impeller must be inserted into the housing in the same manner. A little veg oil on the rubber blades assists in assembly. fit a new gasket to the impeller housing and reassemble in the reverse order from dismantling. George. |

Thanks George that has helped and will have a look tomorrow. I paid £90 to a so called experienced outboard engineer to have a look, he could'nt find it so he took the power trim and plate home to look at over the weekend but forgot to tell me that he's shortly moving 200 miles away to live. Tracked him down 6 months later and got my parts back. To be honest George i'm hell-bent on getting this engine going even if it means trying to do it myself. There's a saying "If you buy a boat you buy problems" or something along them lines. Nevermind worse things happen at sea. Cheers |

Yes. sadly if it's got boobs, wheels or a propellor it will cost you money! And men are attracted to all of these. £££££ bye bye. |

I have a chap local to me that wont rip your arms and legs of and will even come down to you and do the job.
Never start an engin out of water even for a sec as the impeller will burn itself out.
The guys name is Ausin and his number is 07814538282. Tell mhim you have spoken to me. Cheers keith |

This is worth checking before you start dismantling it - check there's nothing blocking the telltale pipe. A friend of mine had a mariner 40 (which I've now got) which did not appear to be pumping when he started it up after being laid up for the winter. He found that some sort of bug had made a home in the telltale pipe so it was clogged up with dead bug/chrysalis/munge etc. A few minutes of poking around with a bit of wire cleared it out. Also, some motors have a "wash" screw at the bottom of the leg, where you can attach a hose & (carefully) run fresh water through the motor without it running. Both my older (Yamaha) mariners have this. This may show you if there's a blockage, & could also flush out any crud that may have settled. Be gentle though. Also, the screw (if it has one) will be marked as "wash", possibly "flush" - don't attach a hose to anything else down there! If in doubt, check the manual |
