Thanks skinny
wow dont the yanks cast different to us. Nearly all the opposite strategies.
Still found one or two good bits though.
My casting actually has gone a bit backward so contacted the guy on the original vid (Roger Mortimer. Well why not?) and if we can agree it he's going to give me a few lessons and he's fairly local to me.
Dont want to tourny cast just some basics from an experienced eye.

i have just got back in from practicing casting my new shimano nexave surf 130f and am pleased to say i achieved consistent casts of at least 86 metres (94+ yards) and that was with a 5 oz sinker inside a tennis ball using an of the ground casting style..... ....i am well pleased with this result and just need to fine a few things so as to be even more consistent and maybe achieve the magical 100 yards..so like me all i can add is to keep trying and you will get there..tight lines folks and may the fishing be good in 2009 HAPPY NEW YEAR all on at hogmany

like the idea of the tennis ball
a) visible
b) wont plug in mud??
Does it work? and how did you go about it? do you seal the ball back up?
At the mo, my lead is just plugging in the ground about 6" on all the fields I use to practice. Waste of time.

WD mate, most folk can do it in my experience if they put in a bit of time. Don't forget that plenty of height gets you further (look up at 45 degrees when delivering the final flick and your sinker will tend to go in that direction). Also, when you are ready, try the "airialised" version which I now do as advocated by John Holden:- Instead of having the sinker rest on the beach, simply let the sinker swing back round behind you to say the 2 or 3 o'clock position then commence your foward turn. I find that this bends (compresses) the rod a bit better. |

i just cut as small a slit in the ball as i can to force the weight through, dont ever bother trying to seal it up again.....Eccles i have had a look at the "airialised" cast that you mention and will give it a bash next time i am out practicing..

Originated this post and thought I was doing ok through the video link?
Had my 1st lesson by Gary Setchell who's fairly local to me in Northampton. (ex brit FS casting champ).
JEEZ, am I impressed or what.
On a good cast, improved mine by 30-50 yards. Probably at best now 160 yds.
HIGHLY, HIGHLY recomended to anybody else out there TO TAKE LESSONS. (not just my instructor but generally)
And while most people say the fish are caught close range. Still good to have in your armoury.
This is how big my grin was yesterday

Leon
No he didn't show me the back cast, but has said once I'm ok and happy with the extended OTG, he'll teach me either pendulum or back cast if I want.
mrix, will try the links
Cheers lads
PS. the LITTLE bits he taught me were probably more important than the major
eg how to tune my multiplier (mag) to my strength of casting. I'd always kept it somewhere near max (10) being a novice, but he tuned it down to 4 which really suprised me. |
