I have often thought about bait presentation, I personaly care about this as the maximum must be obtained from the minimum concidering what it cost's. Which way round? birds seem to turn their food to suit themselves, the Heron will turn his fish so the scales do not abraid his throat, do fish like taking the head or the tail first, I have always baited my hook starting at the head end, that means the tail is the piece nearest the hook point, from now on I am going to try to bait the opposite way so that the head is at the hook end. This change in the way that I bait my hooks as far as worms go may not change things, but the way that I present a fish bait or a sandeel may well do, the tide flow takes the bait out from the main line, in theory as the fish aproaches the bait it is faced with a tail or a head, do they turn their food or just guts it down, just a thought.

Hi, i wondered about this too, so after some thought came up with this, when a fish goes after a smaller fish, the smaller fish will try to get away, therefore presenting its tail first, so i dont think tail first is a problem, secondly all the lures ive seen have the hooks on the tail as well so they too are presented tail first, I dont think (personally) a fish would mind taking bait head first, but i do doubt it would be more effective than the tail. It will be interesting to see if anyone has ever tested this |

Another thought has occured to me, when you see predatory animals on TV they always wait until the prey is not looking at them, if the prey is facing them they remain still until it turns, giving them a better chance of sneaking up. Also, some fish have a false eye at the back which i imagine in the case of a fish, is to fool predators and confuse them as to which end is the head.I think most predators go in from behind to minimise risk to themselves in case the prey fights back or runs when seeing them. just a thought, let us know how it goes. |
