When you buy a new multiplier it is important to get the spool aligned properly before use. This can take hours, if you don't do this then you don't have a precision casting reel. The line should fall off the spool without coiling. What happens is that one rim of the spool wears down quicker than the other causing birdies and will eventually affect the gears.

Level-winds reduce the reels casting capabilities. Back in the 80's the Abu 6500c was the casting reel, but this reel had a level-wind fitted. So in order to improve casting distances anglers carried out home made improvements to their Abu 6500C by removing the level-wind and hack sawing the top bar out on the cage in order to get their thumb right over the spool. Abu took notice of this and brought out the Abu 6500CT (Converted) without the level-wind and a reinforced cage without the top bar. I love Abu's but in my opinion the Daiwa Millionaire Turbo is the smoothest casting reel i've ever used.

Rabbi - Can't wait to try the 7500c3, someone said that they were the mother of all reels. Will you be wanting Ragworm for the fishathon and don't forget to bring a couple of floats for the Wrasse off the back wall.

I have used the abu 6500c3 since it came out.
I soon bought a ct cage for it, it has never let me down.
I am going to buy a new reel soon,so that I can use two rods.
I am thinking of getting the daiwa 7ht.

I think this is a joke ??

It starts off as a multi thread and ends up as a FS thread.

great comedy value though - well done that man !!

Cryton - I honestly dont know what an FS or multi thread is. I remember Cryton on Red Dwarf waffling about technical stuff that no one else understood. If you understand it please explain, I'd like to know mate.

Ok here goes.

A multi (or multiplier) should be spooled up under even tension until about 2-3mm from the top of the spool. This doesn't take hours - more like 1-2 minutes during a fast retrieve (a big cast can nearly empty the spool). Spool alignment is to do with the end float tension which is easily enough done by moving the spool side to side slightly and setting the end bearing tension - about 2 seconds.

Coiling - a multiplier will not birds nest if it is set up correctly. Coiling only occurs on fixed spool (FS) reels where the line comes off in loops. Birds nests on multipliers happen because the spool is running faster that the lead is pulling the line. The rims you refer to are probably for a fixed spool reel as they are stationary during the cast whereas a multiplier has a spool that spins.

If you have any other questions let me know and I'll try to answer them as quick as I can - thanks for the question.

the 7500 is a boat reel and does not perform as a beach casting reel.

sportsmag is a great reel but remember you have mag breaking whereas the turbo only uses blocks. On a field, the turbo would be my preference - but the abu sportsmag would be the choice for others.
