Hi, i know there are a few posts about FS reels which i have read. i was looking at emcast plus 6000 for beachcasting with an Abu Esprit (13'). i was using a Grauvell bittel 3500 but it doesnt seem up to the job. you can get hold of them for 50 or 60 quid as far as i can see.
There seems to be variations on the Emcast which is confusing me. you can get the advanced, plus, and pro which seem interchangable...which should i go for..or should i go for Okuma? thanks, T |

Hi, thanks for your reply. i had heard that the okumas were unreliable, and that the daiwa was a much better reel...is that true? Is it just the daiwa name i'd be paying for?
cheers, T |

Suffice to say that I have been fishing (sea) for over 50yrs and a few folk think that because they have the latest super dooper bit of kit all else is crap. All I can do mate is to let you know what I use. Best of luck keith |

If you really want a Diawa, how about their slightly cheaper model: I bought a Diawa BF5500 at the beginning of the year because I liked the deep skirt on the spool. So far it has performed admirably and is a very smooth winder. I do have a couple of Okumas too which have survived the last couple of years regular fishing with no probs. |

i'm a multiplier merchant but have recentely purchased a daiwa emb advanced 5500 for my partner. Have used it myself for first time last night found very good reel and holds good amount of line and retrieves line quickly. thumbs up on this reel from me. if you look hard enough on internet fish shops cost between 60-65. |

hey, got a daiwa 5500 plus for 50 notes including postage! Leslie's of luton get top marks. also delivered by 10am next day. the reel is vey good quality...and very smooth. deinitely recommended (from my course experience).
However, im not sure how far i should cast really...its Hove beach which is shingle and i think it gets quite deep fairly quickly. it seems that some waves start to break at about 50-70m from the shore, and then again at about 20m from the shore (at where the wave draws back the furthest).
i have lost a lot of tackle (it snaps off in the cast which i think is solved with the new big reel)...should i brave it and really smash it out there...or should i go for the shorter casts?
Any advice would be really appreciated...
Thanks, Toby |

Hi Toby
Welcome aboard to the forum.
If you are getting a crack off in your cast, can I ask if you are using a shockleader on your line ? or are you using the reel line all the way to the rig & weight ?
A shockleader is a higher breaking point line that you attach to the end of your line, its a general rule that you have 10lb for every 1oz of lead used in the cast, so a 5 oz lead requires a 50lb shockleader. minimum.
The lenght of the shockleader is from the rig back to the real with about 4 or 5 turns on the reel as well. this higher line then takes the shock of the cast and prevents the reel line from snapping.
It could be you need a shockleader attached or if you use one, a higher pound line.

Hi, yeah im usin a s/leader with an albright special. the backing line is now 15 (formerly 12) and the leader is 50lb. the casting is much easier but i still haer the knot go through the rings! I was wondering how much distance to put in the cast? im still a bit scared of snapping off to really swing it full power. must be doing 50 or 60 metres now. |

if you are using a 5oz lead the shock leader is more than ample to put more compression into the rod. I use tapered shockleaders when i fish. Daiwa or bullett. This leads to a very small knot i use a full blood knot. This also stops little bits of weed getting attached to the knot. If you are using 50lb shock leader you may hear it a little on the rings when you cast. Try a uni knot i'm sure there are some diagrams on the internet this creates a taper which lets the line flow through the eyes better. What knot are you using anyhow. |
