Hi everyone.

Does anyone know of a good shore location for catching prawns?

I recently bought a couple of prawn traps with the intention of getting some prawns for bait. Gave them a try out this weekend at Torquay and I was impressed at how effective they are. We caught several wrasse, blennys and crabs.....but no prawns. Bait was decomposing sandeels and some nasty old squid.

Any tips for catching prawns would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Hi there,

I suspect that your traps have entrances that are too big if you're getting wrasse in them!

In my opinion without doubt the best way to catch prawns is to use a panel pot (Panel Pot Ltd). These are tough cylindrical drums with entrances small enough to keep everthing out but the prawns. Suspend these from a harbour wall with mackerel (or corned beef!!!) as bait and leave them overnight. Ensure that the pot is always covered by the tide and that it is suspended 2-3 ft above the bottom. This keeps it out of range of the swimming crabs. Prawn makes a great bait for bass, pollack and wrasse.

Good luck.
