Hiya Guys and Gals,
I am seeking an old fishing rod, from the 70's, a Modern Arms Castaway beachcaster, 12 foot, either the 4 or 6 oz version.
Why?
Because I am sentimental and wish to return to my youth as an angler, I already have the reels from those days, a Pfluger SeaKing 2288 and a Penn Squidder, now I seek the rod.
Also looking for a Terry Carrol beachcaster, can anyone help?
Thank you
Phil

Hiya Keith,
Yes you did mention that before, and they are still appearing on ebay at around £10 to £20 at a regular basis, even a carbon one recently.
I tried my 1970's ABU 484's out the other day, both the carbon one and the GRP ones, along with the Squidders and Pflueger Sea Kings, what a buzz using the old gear again, just casting not fishing, and not a bad murmer from 5 different 30 to 40 year old reels, well happy!! Managed 150 yds (130 mtrs+)? With the carbon and my old squidder, not bad considering I have no stomach muscles as such (surgery), and using the old "layback" style, courtesy of the latr Mr Leslie Momcrieff! R.I.P.
If you do hear of these older rods please let me know
Best regards
Phil.

Hiya
Thats ok mate, in reality tackle hasn't really evolved that much, mostley just extra bells, whistles and £'s!!
Rigs have altered a little, but I think the evolution revolution in this fishing world is slow, once we got away from the center pin, which still has it's uses and used some of the new materials around, what new developments have influenced us a great deal, Yes GPS and sophisticated fish finders apart?
Oh and yes the biggest influence of all, decline in fish stocks and species.
You cannot buy them in the shops.
Best regards
Phil

Modern arms rods . My first thoughts were `i haven`t heard that name for years' followed by `you`ll be lucky '.Have you thought about the `freecycle' org as its just the sort of item that will turn up during a loft/garage clearout.
The 484`s were possibly the best rods available for distance casting in the 70s and would stand up well against the new stuff. I think that modern rods and reels are much lighter and more responsive in the hand but certainly don`t catch more fish. As for developments the best in my book have got to be spool design and line lay on the modern fixed spool reel . Not wishing to knock my old daiwa reels (short spools,no bb`s maybe one bronze bush which have over the years given 10 times their cost in reliability) they are not in the same league as their modern equivalents when it comes to casting.
There`s more to fishing than catching fish (and casting ) !
Best of luck in the search for the rods ....sniggle

Hiya,

Oldies rule!!!

At least we have our memories, confused confused or some of them!! of superb fishing times, more than some of the young bucks these days will experiance!

Just can't turn over the rocks as fast as before, nor dig as many worms.

Pull up a bollard and I will tell you a story of times gone by, Ahhhh, those were the days!!! (But what did I have for breakfast?)

Best regards

P.M you earlier about 484s. Will keep a look out and let you no if i see or come across the rods in Question must be the orbit cycle or something as i are starting back shore fish with the 70s spec 484 and a abu 7ooo out the loft. It might start a trend in retro fishing.

Hiya.
Guess who is a happy man!!!!?
Yes, ME!
I have found and purchased a Modern Arms Casterway rod, It is in great condition, even has the original rod bag, and I am very happy with it.
So one "Old Fa*t is going back to his childhood dreams.
For any one unfamiliar with this rod, it is mid '60s, (NO not the 1860's as some might think!)
Found on eBay under vintage rods.
Anyone remember the "Hardy Longbow" rod designed by Leslie Moncrieff (RIP), we there is one there for sale, and people are bidding on it as well.
Thanks to those who understood my searching a little while ago.
Best regards
Phil
