Just a thought and feel free to flame me if this is the norm but why not mark the minimum limits of fish down the side of your priest either with marker or tape?

Personally I use an Abu uptider 9' 6" rated up to 8 ozs. That may sound a bit OTT but at least I know it won't bust easily and can also be used on the boat when I want.

As with sand eel post - cheap on fleabay.

Is it worth hydrating them a little before hooking (ie, bung em in water) to bulk them up or just let the sea do it?
